September 2011

This month: Puerto Rico

Morristown, New Jersey

Puerto Rico is one of the largest islands in the Caribbean and a U.S. Commonwealth. Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493, the island features stunning natural diversity including tropical and dry forests, flatlands and mountains. While the more popular attractions are its beaches and high-class casinos, it also offers the most challenging and exciting golf you can find anywhere, as well as an array of historic landmarks and museums. In fact there is so much to see and do in Puerto Rico that it simply cannot be done in
one trip.

Things you can do

1 Noches de galleria (Gallery Nights): An excellent opportunity to experience the
island's vibrant art scene. Most galleries have openings or special exhibits, as well as
wine and cheese receptions, and occasionally live music or theatrical performances.
Takes place on the October 4 and every 1st Tuesday of each month.
2 Puerto Rico Coffee Expo: The Caribbean Coffee industry's biggest exhibition and
educational forum. Takes place at the PR Convention Center from October 8 – 9.
3 Old San Juan: The fort of San Felipe del Morro (1540) and its neighbor San Cristóbal
(1634), one of the largest forts ever built in the Americas, dominate the entrance to
San Juan Bay. The fortifications of Old San Juan have been declared a World
Heritage Site by the United Nations. Open daily from 9 am to 5 pm.
4 Museum of History, Anthropology & Art: Major collection of pre-Columbian
artifacts to works by today's major painters. NB. Many of the museums in Old San
Juan close for lunch between 11:45 am and 2 pm, so schedule your activities
accordingly if you intend to museum-hop.
5 El Yunque National Park: The only tropical rain forest in the U.S. National Forest
system is one hour's drive from San Juan. Open daily from 7:30 am to 6 pm.
