November 2011

This month: Boca Raton

Boca Raton

The literal translation of "Boca Raton" is "Mouth of The Mouse" ("mouse" in Spanish is "ratón"), derived, so legend has it, from the shape of an inlet in the Biscayne Bay area of Miami, used most probably by pirates in the 18th century. Boca Raton is part of the Florida Gold Coast, which includes neighboring Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach. To its east lies the Atlantic Ocean and miles of pristine beaches. To its west the spectacular Everglades National Park.

Things you can do

1 Everglades National Park: The largest subtropical wilderness in the United States,
boasts rare and endangered species including the American Crocodile and the Florida
Panther. Designated a World Heritage Site, the park is open all year round.
2 The Boca Raton Museum of Art: Now showing Colombian conceptual artist
Federico Uribe. Known for his fascinating transformation of everyday objects into art,
Uribe has received international recognition with exhibits in New York City, Italy,
Spain, Mexico and Germany. For the Museum, he has created a site specific
walk-in environment filling an entire 5000-square-foot gallery. Open daily from
10 am - 5 pm (from noon on weekends) but closed on Monday.
3 Annual Holiday Tree Lighting: Official start of the holiday season, as the Mayor
turns on thousands of twinkling lights throughout the city, followed by an evening of
free musical entertainment. Held at Mizner Park Amphitheater (MAP) on Friday,
  November 25, from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm.
4 The Palm Beaches Marathon: Why not stay a little longer and participate in the
county's premier running event on December 4. Online Registration ends on
November 30 at 5:00 pm EST. Click here!
