April 2012

This month: Las Vegas

Las Vegas, Nevada

Shortly after gambling was legalized in 1931 and construction of the first hotel/casinos had begun, who could have known that Las Vegas would become the city it is today - a glamorous, fantasyland oasis in the middle of the desert? Known as the Entertainment Capital of the World. Vegas offers some of the largest, most incredible attractions you'll find anywhere, all designed to get your attention. Many of these sights can be found along the spectacular 5 mile (8 km) Las Vegas Strip! However, beyond all the excitement and bright lights, you can also find tranquillity and breathtaking natural beauty. Vegas has also been a favored golf destination since the early 50s and 60s.

Things you can do

1 "The Strip": The newest, most spectacular and most popular casinos in Las Vegas are located along the southern end of Las Vegas Boulevard, known as "The Strip" including the luxurious Bellagio and the MGM Grand, Vegas's largest, with over 3,500 slots and 165 game tables.
2 Fremont Street Experience: A seven-block open-air pedestrian mall, featuring permanent performance stages, live entertainment and an hourly graphic light show featuring the world's largest LED display.
3 Cirque du Soleil: Don't leave town without seeing one of their five shows including "LOVE" at the Mirage, which pays tribute to the Beatles, "KA" at the MGM Grand tells of an inspired story of twins and "O" at the Bellagio, the company's first Aquatic show that pays tribute to the magic of the theatre.
4 Imperial Palace Auto Collection: Remarkable collection of more than 200 antique, classic, and special interest automobiles. Open daily from 9:30 am - 9:30 pm on the fifth floor of the Imperial Palace hotel's parking facility.
5 Secret Garden: Discover Siegfried & Roy's special tribute to the natural world featuring tigers and dolphins. Open daily at the Mirage from 11 am to 6:30 pm on weekdays and from 10 am to 6:30 pm on weekends.
6 Arts Factory: A center housing artists, architects, photographers, graphic designers and galleries showcasing contemporary art. Open daily from 9 am to 6 pm.

Conveniently situated between Interstate Highways 15 and 515, McCarran Airport is only five miles (8 km) south of the central business district of Las Vegas and less than a mile (1.6 km) from the famous Las Vegas Strip, a journey that normally takes less than 20 minutes, depending on traffic. Named after Senator Pat McCarran, who played a major role in the development of US aviation, today the airport is one of the busiest in the world.
