What's on in Chicago

Chicago is a busy place all year-round. Just ask any of the 46 million people who visited here in 2012. And while things may slow down a bit in August, there is still plenty to do in America's third most populous city, home to 2.7 million people. Chicago's economy is the fourth largest in the world by GDP among metropolitan areas. The Windy City is home to three of the world's tallest buildings, headquarters of 29 of the largest 500 US companies and sports franchises in all major US sports.

Things you can do:Map of Chicago, Illinois

  1. Chicago Air and Water Show: Enjoy the Air and Water Show on August 17-18 at Jarvis Beach, one of Chicago's many beaches along its Lake Michigan coast. Pilots perform stunts over the water, shown to spectators along the lakefront and broadcasted by radio and video stream.

  2. Magnificent Mile: Stroll along the most famous section of Chicago's signature Michigan Avenue. The street contains many well known landmarks and is lined with every store imaginable featuring designer-brand clothing, luxury boutiques and prestigious restaurants.

  3. Skydeck Chicago in the Willis Tower: View Chicago and the horizons of four neighboring states from a glass-enclosed ledge 1,353 feet in the air near the top of Willis Tower, the third tallest skyscraper in the world.

  4. Million Dollar Quartet: Experience a renowned nationwide spectacle at this award-winning musical inspired by the celebrated 1956 jam session that brought together rock and roll legends Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins. The cast will perform the musical almost daily throughout August in the Apollo Theater.

  5. Wrigley Field: Watch one of baseball's most storied franchises at their home park, Wrigley Field, where the Chicago Cubs have played for nearly a century. Baseball fans and non-baseball fans alike enjoy feeling the game's liveliness in a historic atmosphere. The Cubs will play 16 home games in August.

  6. Field Museum of Natural History: This museum's dinosaur skeleton exhibit now displays "Sue," the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus ever discovered. The Evolving Planet exhibit is the most popular, showing an array of artifacts from billions of years of life on Earth.

  7. Art Institute of Chicago: Explore the paintings and sculptures of the city's world famous art museum. The vast collection intrigues art enthusiasts of many genres. It is known for entertaining even those who don't consider themselves β€œart buffs,” and is located near several other popular attractions downtown.
