What's on in Rio de Janeiro

There's a lot to love about Rio de Janeiro. A vibrant coastal city famous for its sun soaked culture and non-stop nightlife, Rio attracts travelers from every corner of the globe. Visitors come for a good time, but soon find that equal excitement lies in Rio's spectacular landscape. Nestled along the long southern coast of Brazil – where the Atlantic Ocean meets Guanabara Bay – this international city of more than 6 million people is home to an ethnically diverse population, a booming economy and a party scene that is second to none.

It seems like there is always something exciting happening in Rio – because there is! Not only do partyers flock annually here for the famed Carnival festival, but Rio will also play host to two of the biggest events on the planet – the 2016 Summer Olympics and soccer's World Cup tournament next year. If you can't make either of these competitions, there is always consolation in that fact that you can view an exciting sand volleyball game at one of the most famous beaches in the world, Copacabana.

Things you can do:Map of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

  1. Copacabana Beach: With its clear blue waters, white sand, and coconut water vendors abounding, Copacabana is Brazil at its best. The epitome of Rio's free spirit culture, this 4 kilometer-long gem, located in the southern section of the city, is host to never-ending beach parties and some of Brazil's most exciting events, including one of the wildest New Year's eve parties around.

  2. Christ the Redeemer Statue, Corcovado: Looking out on the city from atop Corcovado Mountain sits one of Rio's most famed attractions, a towering 98-foot tall statue of Jesus Christ. Symbolizing Brazil's deep religious roots, the art deco statue attracts thousands of visitors everyday catching a glimpse of one of South America's great wonders.

  3. Maracanã Stadium: Opened in 1950 to host the FIFA World Cup, this colossal open-air stadium has been home to some of Brazilian soccer's greatest moments. Flocking to watch a soccer style coined, "the beautiful game," thousands of Brazilians pack MaracanĂ£ Stadium to cheer on some of the biggest names in the sport.

  4. Teatro Municipal: Looking to take in a classic Opera or see a world-class ballet performance? Then the lavish Teatro Municipal is the place to be. A must-see with its ornate architecture and grand interior, this centrally located landmark is truly the crown jewel of Brazil's thriving cultural scene.

  5. The Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden: For the green thumbs, a tour of the Botanical Gardens in Rio will amaze. Showcasing the diversity of Brazil's exotic flora, the garden offers a relaxing alternative to Rio's hustle and bustle. With over 6,000 different species of tropical and subtropical plants and trees – including 900 varieties of palm trees – visitors can easily find themselves getting lost in the beauty of this sprawling attraction.

  6. Sugar Loaf Mountain: Nestled at the mouth of Guanabara Bay, this stunning peak offers some of Rio's best views. If you're looking to reach the summit, a cable car ride will bring you all the way up to the peak at Pão de Açúcar. But for the adventurous type, a trip to the top means bringing along the rock-climbing gear and scaling some of the most thrilling and challenging climbing routes in world.
