New Orleans, Louisiana

Food and festivities are at the heart of New Orleans culture, and Thanksgiving is a great time to join in the celebration. As the birthplace of the legendary "turducken," New Orleans has always put a unique and decadent spin on the holiday. Visit the city's finest restaurants for a traditional Thanksgiving meal, or a delicious French Creole spread. Take advantage off the temperate fall weather with a stroll through the historic city while enjoying the crisp breezes and autumn sunshine. After the Turkey Day revelry, let the good times roll with a Black Friday excursion to the local specialty shops and eclectic boutiques. Round out your trip with a visit to the Celebration in the Oaks holiday light spectacular, holding its 30th anniversary event this year. No matter how you spend your time in New Orleans, you'll find your own home away from home in The Big Easy.

Top Attractions:

New Orleans, Louisiana

1 Audubon Zoo

This New Orleans landmark boasts 58 acres of animals in their natural habitats, and consistently ranks among the best zoos in the country. Visitor favorites include elephants, a Komodo dragon and a rare white tiger. You will also find bears, monkeys, snakes, orangutans, and more. For the adventurous foodies out there, "Hoppy Thanksgiving" at the zoo's Butterfly Garden and Insectarium is serving up traditional Thanksgiving dishes with an insect surprise! If you've ever wanted to try cricket pumpkin pie or wax worm cranberry sauce, say Bug Appétit!

2 City Park

New Orleans' largest outdoor attraction is also one of the oldest parks in the country. This expansive, tree-canopied green space welcomes millions of visitors each year, and features themed gardens, biking and walking paths, live concerts, an amusement park and much more. Visit the Morning Call, which has been serving beignets and coffee for over 142 years. Ride the handcrafted carousel at Carousel Gardens Amusement Park. Tee up for a round of golf at City Putt's mini golf course. Or immerse yourself in local flora at the 12-acre Botanical Gardens.

3 St. Louis Cathedral

The impressive and towering St. Louis Cathedral has served as a backdrop to presidential speeches, diplomatic visits and countless movies and TV shows. Over the centuries, it has become one of the most recognizable and iconic buildings in New Orleans. As the oldest continually used cathedral in North America, and the mother church to the city's large Catholic population, the cathedral's awe-inspiring architecture has attracted visitors and locals for nearly 300 years.

4 Garden District

If you're looking for a break from the frenetic energy of the French Quarter, the Garden District provides an oasis of architectural marvels and lush English gardens. The historic streets are lined with grand homes and vibrant landscaping—providing the perfect backdrop for a leisurely stroll. Spend a quiet afternoon perusing the unique collection of boutiques, cafes and galleries. In the upper Garden District, you'll also find Lafayette Cemetery No. 1, one of the oldest and most beautiful cemeteries in all of New Orleans.

5 French Quarter

Known as the Vieux Carré or the "Quarter" to locals, the French Quarter serves at the city's cultural hub. New Orleans' oldest neighborhood is home to the French Market—a five-block, open-air market featuring an array of local produce, specialty art, handmade crafts, boutique shops and more. You'll find a trove of restaurants in the French Quarter, many serving up inspired and delicious cuisine on the big day. After you nosh, grab a drink and get a good seat for the Bayou Classic Thanksgiving Day Parade, which runs from the Superdome to the French Market.
