Hawaii

Hawaii Island is the youngest and largest island in the Hawaiian chain, famous for active volcanoes, golf courses, scenic coastlines and endless natural wonders. Hawaii's temperate weather and breathtaking natural beauty make it the perfect getaway for the holidays. Whether you're walking on a black sand beach, snorkeling with manta rays, or horseback riding along the Kona Coast, holidays on the Big Island are second to none. Watch the long-running Kailua-Kona Christmas Parade, which runs through the city's streets and ends at the Coconut Grove Marketplace. Hilo Palace Theater hosts a performances of The Nutcracker, and the Kona Beach Hotel presents the Celebration of Christmas in Music concert. Attending a luau is also a great way to celebrate the season in true Hawaiian style. Make sure to keep an eye out for Santa sightings, festive light displays and elaborately decorated homes (and cars!) throughout the island.

Top Attractions:

Hawaii

1 Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Located 30 miles southwest of Hilo, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the home of Kilauea volcano, one of the most active volcanoes on earth. Here you can experience a unique and up close look at the stunning and dramatic landscape produced by a volcano. The chance to witness the primal process of creation and destruction make this park one of the most popular attraction for visitors and a sacred destination for native Hawaiians.

2 Waipio Valley

Also known as "The Valley of the Kings," Waipio Valley is an important cultural and historic site with displays of unparalleled natural beauty. This scenic valley spans one mile across and over five-miles deep, and is surrounded by 2000-feet high cliffs. Once the home of thousands of Native Hawaiian, today there are less than 100 residents living amongst the valley's waterfalls, taro fields and rivers. You can view the valley from the coastal Waipio Valley Overlook, take a guided van tour or horseback ride to explore the valley’s hidden wonders.

3 Wailuku River State Park

It's worth making a trip to visit the easily accessible Rainbow Falls, which has an 80-foot drop and is known for the rainbows that are formed in the surrounding mist. Travel further upland along the Wailuku River and you'll come to Peepee Falls, which feeds the famous bubbling pools known as Boiling Pots. These terraced pools are connected by a series of cascading waterfalls alongside columns formed by cooled basalt lava.

4 Liliuokalani Gardens

Stroll through this tranquil 30-acre Japanese garden, dedicated in 1917 as tribute to Hawaii's first Japanese immigrants. This immaculately landscaped park features arching bridges over koi ponds, lush gardens, stone lanterns and even a tea house. Breathtaking views of Hilo Bay and Coconut Island add a scenic backdrop for these gorgeous gardens.

5 Kohala Coast

Marvel at the rugged lava fields, remnants of eruptions from Hualalai volcano centuries ago. Nestled amongst the jet-black and red lava rock fields are sprawling areas of developed land, featuring world-class resorts, fine dining and Hawaii's top-rated golf courses. Here you will also find Hapuna Beach State Park, one of Hawaii Island's largest white sand beaches. You can also explore cultural and historic treasures at the Puako Petroglyph Archeological Preserve.
