Tower of London
The 900-year-old Tower of London played many roles over the centuries — from prison to palace and everything in between. Today, it is one of the most famous castles in the world, attracting over 2 million visitors a year. This spectacular World Heritage Site offers eye-opening insight into the country's storied past. View the Crown Jewels exhibition, the Beefeaters, and the Royal Mint. Or take a historical tour highlighting the gruesome history of executions that have taken place over the years on these famous grounds.
Hyde Park
At 350 acres, Hyde Park is London's largest open space, drawing crowds and visitors since its opening in 1635. One of the park's highlights is the Serpentine, an 18th century man-made lake popular for boating and swimming. Southwest of the Serpentine, you'll find a memorial fountain resembling an artificial stream, installed in honor of Princess Diana. Visit Apsley House, former home of the first Duke of Wellington that has been converted into a museum housing Wellingtons' magnificent collection of paintings.
Churchill War Rooms
& Museum
This perfectly preserved site gives an unflinching glimpse into the nerve center used by Prime Minister Winston Churchill throughout World War II. As part of the Imperial War Museum, these cramped quarters feature the cubicle where Churchill slept and the improvised radio studio used to broadcast his famous wartime speeches. This is one destination history buffs cannot afford to miss.
St. Paul's Cathedral
Sitting atop the site of a Roman temple, St. Paul's Cathedral is one of the largest and widely considered to be one of the most spectacular in the world. The previous church was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666, and rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren, who called the Cathedral his life's greatest work. Today, St. Paul's stands as masterpiece of English design and a true feat of architectural genius. If you can make the 259-step climb up the dome, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of the cathedral's famous Whispering Gallery.
