First opened in 1927 as one of the grand movie palaces of the era, the California Theater was build in the ornate style of the time in the heart of downtown San Jose. In 2004, after a $75-million renovation, the theater reopened with modern amenities and an interior meticulously restored to its original splendor.

Lick Observatory on Mt. Hamilton |
Built in 1888 by philanthropist James Lick, this observatory was originally built as a tourist attraction and was the first permanently occupied mountain-top observatory. Today, scientists from University of California Santa Cruz still monitor the observatory’s state-of-the-art telescopes. The long winding road leading to top provides stunning views of the valley; so make sure to set aside plenty of time to drive slow and take in the scenery.

Winchester Mystery House |
This 19th-century mansion is no ordinary house! The personal residence of Sarah Winchester (widow of gun magnate William Wirt Winchester), was claimed by many to be haunted, and contains architectural oddities including doors leading to nowhere and windows overlooking other rooms. Allegedly, renovation and construction on the house didn’t cease for over 38 years. Though the mystery may never be solved, it is definitely worth seeing for yourself.
